Emile is an aging professor who makes a journey from his home in England to receive an honorary degree on Canada's west coast, although his real purpose is to reconnect with his only living relative, his niece Nadia. A single mother, she has her own set of troubles and receives him coldly. Her failed marriage and her difficulties with her own daughter have some relationship to a childhood of loneliness and homelessness, something that Emile bears responsability for. Two worlds colide as Emile deals with the guilt of his past, bringing him out of his present circumstances and into the world of memory and immagination, and struggles to connect with his estranged niece and her rather reluctant ten year old daughter, Maria. Will Elime find in hopes of reconciliation the strength to confront the ghosts of his past?
